I bought this Lego set in the Barcelona store during my stay in the city in May 2024. This purchase, as well as that of the Ford Mustang G1967, made online shortly before, are part of the process of frustration I had with two other Lego sets; the Mustang Shelby GT500 and the 1968 Mustang Fastback. In the first case it was a Technic model while in the second it was an old Speed Champions version. For reasons that I explained in the GT1967 post, those sets had disappointed me for different reasons and so I needed new sets that represented the Mustang in a way worthy of this car. I didn't know this Dark Horse model, but seeing it in the photo I liked it and I instinctively understood that even if it might not have been the best, it certainly wouldn't disappoint me. At the same time I have to say that at this moment after having assembled much more complex sets, I have in a certain sense frozen my passion for the Speed Champions and in addition to this set I only have the Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 which however is a Technic and I will assemble it after this. As I wrote in the post on Notre-Dame, I already have other architecture and building sets and I will certainly focus on these and the Technic ones, so I have no plans to buy Speed Champions in the near future. This set had four bags rather than the classic two of the normal Speed Champions, however the number of bricks was visibly the same. The total steps were 105 so in line with the others in the same category. I noticed that assembling this type of set was more of a commitment than a way to relax, I found it too simple and coming from two demanding and larger sets, it seemed like I was assembling something really tiny. Compared to other Speed Champions however this one had a different assembly principle that began with the almost complete assembly of the cockpit and the external coverings always of the central part. Logically it was followed first with the rear and then with the front. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for this type of set, I was happy to see that especially the part that I prefer the most of the Mustang, namely the rear lights, were reproduced with a print and not with stickers. Of course they were not bricks but it is already a big step forward and above all a solution that I have wanted for a long time. This is the penultimate Speed Champions that I assemble and I must say that if on one hand I appreciated the new solutions, on the other hand they no longer represent a challenge. The final design of the Mustang Dark Horse is very beautiful and gives the appearance of a miniature but very detailed muscle car, however this is not enough and at the moment it does not give me much motivation for products of the same type. Another aspect that I had forgotten were the stickers, I think that in the next lego I will not miss them at all just as I didn’t miss them for the last two more challenging sets. With the next Technic Speed Champions, I will experiment the last option of a type of set, I hope that at least that represents a challenge and giving me more motivation. A.M.
